Breast Feeding

On the occasion of World Breastfeeding Awareness Week (August 1–7), the Women Empowerment Cell, GITAM, in collaboration with the Departments of Community Medicine, Paediatrics, and Obstetrics & Gynaecology, organised an awareness session for 30 pregnant women from Yendada and Rushikonda communities on August 5 at GIMSR, in association with local Anganwadi centres.

The session focused on promoting effective breastfeeding practices through interactive discussions and a live demonstration of correct positioning and attachment using a mannequin. Postgraduates of Community Medicine engaged individually with participants, providing hands-on guidance on breastfeeding techniques and kangaroo mother care.

Emphasising the importance of antenatal education in improving exclusive breastfeeding rates, the programme also highlighted maternal nutrition and family support. A “Father’s Pledge” ceremony was conducted to encourage partner involvement, and nutritious snacks were provided to all participants.

The initiative reflects GITAM and GIMSR’s commitment to community health and women’s empowerment through meaningful outreach activities.
